What does the nomination process look like?

The Nomination Committee, a renowned and independent board of sustainability experts from diverse institutional and geographical backgrounds, issues a selection of leaders and pioneers based on a clear set of criteria. Each member of the Nomination Committee nominates between one and three outstanding individuals for each category (leaders and pioneers).

The members of the Nomination Committee:

  • Susanne Bergius, Independent journalist specialised in sustainable business and investment (i.e. Handelsblatt, Die Zeit)
  • Paul Clements-Hunt, UNEP Financial Initiative
  • David Johnston, Founder, What's Working Inc., USA (winner pioneer 2007)
  • Ruud W.M. Nijs, Head of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Department at Rabobank
  • Tessa Tennant, Executive Chair, The ICE Organisation and Founding Chair, Association of Sustainable & Responsible Investment in Asia (ASrIA) UK and Hong Kong (Award Winner 2003)
  • SAM analysts
  • Bob Welsh, Chief Executive, VicSuper Pty Ltd., Australia
  • Peter Zollinger, Executive Director, SustainAbility Ltd., UK



The nomination documentation is public, allowing individuals outside the Nomination Committee to submit further nominations.

Nominations without a fully completed form as well as self-nominations will not be considered. The Award office will compile all valid nominations and forward them to the Selection Committee. Criteria such as religion, gender, nationality, age or institutional background have no impact whatsoever on the selection process.
